The single engine air tanker, or SEAT is stationed at Miller Field for the next 60 to 90 days. This plane is available to assist fire suppression efforts in the Pine Ridge, Black Hills and other nearby areas when not needed locally. The airplane is a Dromader M18T with a 550-gallon tank that can handle fire retardant, gel or water. It is under contract to the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency. The SEAT base is managed by the Nebraska Forest Service. The plane is standing by, ready for action, and the crew is never far away. With lightning storms popping up on a regular basis, it is a little bit of insurance for Nebraska’s largest remaining coniferous forest, and also offers reassurance and backup for rural fire departments.
