Today is National Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week is an observance in the United States that pays tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. The formal memorial is on May 15, and Police Week is the calendar week in which the memorial falls. The event is sponsored by the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP)
As part of the observance there will be a memorial service for trooper Marvin Hanson Thursday at 11am at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Trooper Hanson was killed in the line of duty while serving the North Central Nebraska area.
There will be a first responder memorial event at 8pm Friday at the Justice Center.
