The Valentine Community Schools Board of Education has spent almost six months studying opportunities to make the school buildings more energy efficient. Working with a specialized consulting company, a plan was approved Monday night to improve lighting, heating & air conditioning and windows. The Elementary and Middle Schools were built in the early 1960s and still have the original windows and doors. The school board approved a 1.9 million dollar lease purchase agreement to upgrade this infrastructure. According to school superintendent Jamie Isom, the work will begin this summer and they hope the majority of work is done by fall. The energy savings from the new upgrades will help pay for the initial cost of materials and construction. The school board hopes to keep the property tax request at the same current level.
