VALENTINE, NE – June 23, 2025 – The Sandhills Prairie Refuge Association announced its upcoming “August Hike and Plant Tour” at the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, August 2, 2025. This educational and engaging event is open to the entire family and promises a unique opportunity to explore the beauty and history of the Sandhills. Participants will meet at the trailhead for the Civilian Conservation Corps Fire Tower Trail at 10:00 AM CDT and will be back for lunch provided by the SPRA around 12:00 PM (Noon). This interactive tour will focus on plant identification along the trail. The event will also offer insights into the rich history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the unique ecology of the Sandhills, prime bird-watching opportunities, and a panoramic view of the prairie from the old fire tower.
