The North Central RC&D held a regular meeting on Wednesday in Bassett. The board reviewed the success of the recent tire amnesty project in Valentine. Almost 250 tons of tires were accepted in only 6 hours. They are currently working with the Nebraska Department of Energy and Environment, where the grant came from, to cover the additional tonnage. The board members also discussed ideas to make the tire amnesty project go smoother and a more accurate ongoing tally of weights. They are planning to apply for another amnesty grant for 2026, but it will not be held in Valentine.
In other business, the RC&D will be at the 2025 Ranch Expo in Bassett on June 18th and 19th. They will have recycling information available and will once again be organizing the Lick Tub Challenge. If you have a good use for old cattle lick tubs, submit your prototype to win cash prizes in youth and adult divisions. Watch for more information. They are also looking into an electronic recycling project and a fall paper shredding event.
