After roughly 24 hours of deliberation by 133 electors participating in an effort to name a new Pope in Vatican City this week, white smoke was visible from the Sistine Chapel, indicating a new pope had been named.
Cardinal Robert Prevost is an American who previously held the position of archbishop of Chiclayo, Peru. Prevost has chosen to change his name to Pope Leo XIV.
President Donald Trump posted on social media, “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
Senator Pete Rickets of Nebraska said ““I am amazed by this historic moment to witness the first ever American Pope. I pray
for the Holy Father Leo XIV and look forward to a long-lasting pontificate.”
Rickets is reportedly a follower of Catholicism.
