A note from local patriots Don and Ginny Nelson. Cherry County and surrounding communities currently have the opportunity to celebrate the 250th anniversary of an important patriotic event. “The shot heard ‘round the world.”
Area residents are encouraged to take part in this kickoff event to begin celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary. This will be the first event under the US Semi
quincentennial Commission to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in 2026.
On the night of April 18, 1775, after receiving the lantern signal “two if by sea” in the old North Church. Paul Revere, Samuel Prescott, and William Dawes made the
historic ride to Lexington Massachusetts warning that “the regulars are coming!”
The next day the Battles of Lexington and Concord, were fought. In that spirit the America 250 program is calling on state buildings, civic organizations, churches, schools,
offices and homes to display two lights on the evening of Friday April 18, to shine throughout the night.
If two lights is impractical, two lanterns cut out of yellow paper and displayed in your front window at home, in school and at work is great. The important thing is to
be part of this commemoration as we move toward Independence Day 2026.
