The National Weather Service in North Platte says that drought conditions have improved some over the northern Sandhills in the past month. Most of Cherry County is in either a D1 or D2 drought, which is classified as moderate to severe drought. Parts of the northern panhandle are in extreme drought. However much of central and north eastern Cherry County has seen some improvement in the classification of drought conditions due to recent rains and snowfall. The weather service explains that precipitation amounts for the past 30 days were an inch or better over north central Nebraska into eastern Custer County.
While precipitation has been beneficial over the past month, the forecast is predicting above average temperatures and breezy conditions over the rest of the week. Area residents are asked to continue to exercise caution when outdoors as the danger of wildfires will persist across the region of north central Nebraska and south central South Dakota.
