The Valentine City Council held its regular monthly meeting Thursday evening. Michael Hoback with AMGL provided the annual audit report, stating that Valentine has “by far the lowest property tax levy (that he has) seen in the state”. This is possible due to the local sales tax which is by far the biggest revenue generator for the municipality. Overall, the audit went well.
The council approved closing Hall Street from A and B street as well as the sale and consumption of alcohol August 2nd during the annual Crazy Day event.
Appointments to the golf course board were approved, including Grant Bitner, Brooks Coleman, Chris Elliott, and Max Renning.
Also on the agenda, was discussion of the creation of a new position at the local government level. Mayor Kyle Arganbright stated that he would like to see code enforcement be conducted outside the Valentine Police Department by a potentially new position of Code Enforcement/Zoning Inspector. The idea was floated earlier when the police department was short staffed. There are now two applicants who are working through the system to be hired as local officers which would give VPD a full roster. A job description and pay scale would be discussed at next month’s council meeting.
A lengthy discussion was held between property owners on 5th street along the proposed sidewalk expansion and setback. Almost every property owner along the route was represented at the meeting. It appeared that the council was ready to take action on the issue, but due to a technicality on the agenda, the council will have to revisit the topic at a future meeting.
The next meeting of the Valentine City Council will be held at 6pm on Thursday, April 10th at the City Library meeting room.
