The City of Valentine conducted a lengthy regular meeting on Thursday
evening. Danielle Schubauer with Twisted Sisters Salon and Spa was
approved for a liquor license following a public hearing at which there
were no comments in favor or against. Members of the Cherry County Ag
Society were present to request a CDBG Tourism Development grant. However,
there were concerns that the City of Valentine could apply for such a
grant that would be utilized outside city limits. The grant would be used
to enclose the pavilion space north of the rodeo arena which could then be
utilized by more people and events. In the last year, the space was used
10 days. It was recommended that the Ag Society approach the County,
however the City would look into options through the CNEB. The Ag Society
also requested use of the shooting range during the High School Rodeo
Finals because the state has sanctioned shooting sports as part of the
rodeo. The council moved in favor of that request, as well as a request
to install another water tap at the fairgrounds from the City.
Neeley Cronin, a student at VHS was on the agenda requesting permission to
do cleanup at Boothill Cemetery and create easier access for lawn mowers
and members of the public. There was discussion about installation of
sprinklers and other maintenance issues that may be addressed with grants.
The proposal was approved by the council.
Many in attendance for the meeting were interested in the request by Open
Plains Transit for local match funding. After considerable discussion, it
was decided that the city would provide the $47,480 requested over two
years, contingent upon Cherry County and Cherry County Hospital matching
the request.
The council also approved doubling the camping fees at the City Park to $10.
Later in the meeting there was more lengthy discussion on a proposal to
improve the south sidewalks along 5th street from Main Street to Green.
This improvement would set the sidewalks back several feet from the
highway and would require that property owners along the route remove and
replace fences, etc. as the sidewalks would need to be placed inside the
yards of some properties. Mayor Kyle Arganbright stated that no one alive
today would be to blame for this problem, and the city would have to set
aside some funding to pay for the replacement of fences, etc. Some had
concerns about where they could park, as the sidewalk would be moved so
close to their homes that their cars and trucks would be parked in line
with the sidewalks. The issue was ultimately tabled to the March meeting.
Gregg Perrett and Luke Moser were reappointed to the Airport Advisory
Board until February 2028, Rick Joseph to the Cemetary Board until
February 2028, and Kay Reese was appointed to the Cemetary Board for the
same timeframe.
The next regular meeting of the Valentine City Council will be March 13th.
