With Winner Regional Hospital in Winner, SD announcing an end to their OB
program, Cherry County Hospital in Valentine is possibly the only hospital
to provide those services in the two state area for 120 miles.
The nearest facilities for the delivery of babies in the region would be
in Pierre, SD, and O’Neill, North Platte and Chadron, NE, or roughly a 2
hour drive in any direction. According to Melissa Williams at Cherry
County Hospital, the hospital and it’s administration believes that it is
in a position to handle the influx of OB patients that is anticipated,
with 4 MD’s on staff. Williams stated that they are even marketing their
services to the south central South Dakota area, encouraging patients to
consider Cherry County Hospital as an option for delivery of babies in
