Valentine Economic Development Director Mark Hagge appeared on the KVSH Comment Program Friday morning to discuss several ongoing projects. Housing has been a major issue in the community for a number of years. Through an Affordable Housing Trust Fund Grant through the State of Nebraska, Valentine has been able to complete two new houses on Edna Street in Valentine. These 1348 square foot, three bedroom and two bath houses will sell for a price of $273,000 each. There is also down payment assistance and some income guidelines apply. There will be an open house on September 28th from 8 to 11AM for the public to review the homes. After these homes are sold, the city has plans to build a third similar home on Ray Street.
Another project that ED has been working with, is the Heart City Theater Group. At this time they have raised $35,000 in private donations, $50,000 from Cherry County Visitors Promotion Board and on Thursday evening, the Valentine City Council agreed to a $100,000 loan. The group plans to close on the property on Main Street the First of October. Tax deductible contributions can be made to Sandhills Area Foundation care of the Heart City Theater Group.
The location of the new community run theater will be the building on Main Street that was the former Jewell Theater.
