On Sunday, April 21, The US Forest Service carried out a prescribed burn south of Nenzel in the McKelvie National Forest land. However, the winds started blowing slightly higher and humidity slightly lower than what was anticipated. When the burn began to surpass the designated fire lines, the USFS officials sent a mutual aid request to Cody and Kilgore Fire Departments to help keep the fire contained. According to Kilgore fire chief Todd Rothleutner, very little area burned beyond the prescribed perimeter, but the trucks from Kilgore and Cody did remain on scene for quite some time as a precaution.
