Just past 1/3rd of the goal of 600 ton of tires at the tire amnesty event North of Newport. Kim Burge, Director, reports, “there is ALOT of room left so load up those tires and head to Newport. Open today until 4 pm. This event is sponsored by Upper Elkhorn NRD and RC&D. The grant making this whole event available is from Nebraska Dept of Energy and Environment. If you have tires and won’t be able to make the 4:00 deadline today, please let me know. Reach Kim at 402.376.5842. This is her cell so you can text her as well. With only 222 ton of the 600 total tons that can be accepted, the end of the event today is not a hard stop. However please let Kim know a weight or tire count if you are bringing tires after 4 pm today. The tires will start to be collected Thursday by Champlin Tire from Concordia KS. They process, manufacture, and market products derived from scrap tires and plastics. They produce park benches and picnic tables from these materials and market them. Tires that meet used tire specifications are taken to their facility in Concordia for reclamation and distributed according to local markets. Salvageable casings are repaired and retreaded in their plant. Tubes are separated and recycled. Tractor and large tire sidewalls are cut and turned into silage covers. Tractor tires meeting specifications are turned inside out for feed bunks for ranching operations. Tire disposal not turned back into an end market is processed into a 2” primary shred and placed in a state licensed monofill. This product will be reclaimed as down stream markets develop.
