There are a couple of major events on the horizon for the Valentine Community. The City of Valentine and Cherry County Tourism have jointly engaged an architect to conduct a feasibility study on converting the old Shopko Building into a wellness and convention center and they are looking for public input. There will be an input opportunity from 5 to 7:30 PM on Thursday at the former Shopko building. You can visit the site at any time during that time frame to visit with the architect and other community folks about amenities you would like to see included. On Friday, May 12th starting at 8:30am Valentine area community members are invited to help in a Volunteer Planting Day on Main Street in Valentine, NE. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about tree and shrub planting, using water-wise plants in the landscape, and general planting how-to’s from representatives from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Over 1,200 shrubs and perennials and 25+ trees will be planted in the bumpouts at intersections and the remaining mid-block sidewalk planter locations to complete the finished look of Valentine’s reconstructed Main Street. All are welcome to come help leave their mark on Main Street and be a part of an exciting new chapter in Valentine, Nebraska’s history.
