Calving Season is in full swing for many cattle ranchers in the KVSH listening area. Calving season is also quickly approaching at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge just northeast of Valentine. Katie
Schober is the Assistant Operations Manager at Ft. Niobrara, and she has stated that while none of the Bison have calved yet, there are 60-70 calves expected in the coming weeks at the refuge. The total herd population at Ft. Niobrara is approximately 350 at this time. The bison herd is still accessible to the public by motor vehicle for viewing at the refuge. As always, a reminder to stay in your vehicle while viewing the bision, even if you feel you are at a safe distance. While bison may often seem docile, they are wild animals and may be aggressive.
