Just after 10pm on Sunday July 17th, emergency crews were dispatched to the report of a two vehicle accident just South of the Cherry County/ Thomas County line. According to Thomas County Sheriff Joe Smith, a pickup driving north bound in the southbound lane collided with a flat-bed semi driving south in the southbound lane. The driver, who was the lone occupant of the pickup required extrication from the wreckage by Thomas County Fire and Rescue. The semi-truck did catch fire, causing a small grass fire as well, which Thomas County Fire was able to extinguish. the driver of the semi was transported by Thomas County ambulance to Great Plains Regional Medical Center for minor injuries and released. The driver of the pickup was transported by Thomas county ambulance to the Thomas County Airport for air transport to Kearney for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries. According Thomas County Sheriff Joe Smith, a couple from Custer County came upon the accident who had fire and rescue background, as well as a medical professional who acted as first responders to the event and were critical in the treatment of the seriously injured individual. The Cherry County Sheriff’s office also aided in Thomas county in this event, and the accident is still under investigation by the Thomas County Sheriff and the Nebraska state patrol.
