Cherry County Attorney Eric Scott has announced that a grand jury proceeding was convened on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 in Cherry County District Court involving the death of Paul Nickisch Jr.
Anytime a person dies in the custody of law enforcement, a grand jury is convened pursuant to Nebraska law.
Nickisch died on December 25, 2020 at the Cherry County Hospital awaiting trial in a 1st Degree Murder case involving the March 4, 2019 shooting death of his wife, Pamela Nickisch.
The grand jury panel, consisting of 16 jurors and one alternate, deliberated before returning a verdict of “no true bill”, meaning criminal conduct was NOT found. The death was found to be by natural causes and no foul play suspected.
