Local Valentine resident Mike Huggins is competing by kayak in the MR340, a 340 mile river race on the Missouri River, running from Kansas City to St. Charles. The race got underway on Tuesday morning, August 4th, and ends August 7th. Paddlers have to battle obstacles such as buoys, barges, and extreme fatigue. It is the longest continuous canoe and kayak marathon in North America besides the Yukon 1000. Racers have 88 hours to finish, and last year, only 2/3 of the competitors were able to do so in that time. There are solo, tandem and team divisions, along with stand up paddle boards, pedal boats, and even a jon boat.
