The Sparks Spurs Chapter of the Cowboy Fast Draw Association hosted the Nebraska State Championship and Great Plains Territorial Championship in Valentine this past weekend. 85 shooters from over a dozen states competed for the titles. Some of the states represented included California, Washington, Arizona, Texas, Virginia and of course Nebraska and South Dakota. The competition was stiff with 12 of the top 20 ranked men’s shooters in the country in Valentine for this shoot. When the dust settled, Dean Storms AKA “Beaver Creek Kid” won both the State and Territorial men’s competitions. Dean is a member of the Sparks Spurs and resides in Tripp County SD. In the women’s competition, “Lightning” from Minnesota, won both titles this year. Chuck Bertrang of Valentine AKA “Frito Bandito” was the top Nebraska man in the state match and received free entry to the world championships in Fallon Nevada in October. Chuck placed 14th overall on Friday.

Joe and April Bacon were on hand with concession for all three days with the “hog Trough” BBQ wagon.

The Sparks Spurs would like to thank the community and especially the area businesses for their support for this event. Each year the contestants rave about the hospitality, location and prizes awarded.
