According to Pennington County Fire Administrator Jerome Harvey, a wildfire in Wanblee, SD fire is now burning 3,500-5,00 acres.

Overnight Sunday the fire spread in all directions. Crews are working to stop the forward progression of the fire. It is 0% contained at this time.

The fire is located near the intersection of Hwy 73 and Hwy 44, south of Kadoka.

Two structures have burned. The communities of Georgetown and Wanblee are not threatened at this time.

Suppression efforts are being hampered by drought stressed vegetation and steep inaccessible terrain.

The fire started at approximately 4:33 p.m. Sunday, July 16. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is leading the investigation.
